My opinion on Discord

Over the last year, I have started to feel completely dissatisfied with how the Discord platform is operated.

I have always been a big fan of Discord, both as a company and as a product, especially due to its gaming-related culture, but with the (apparently still) ongoing effort to make the platform appealing to any type of user, I sadly feel like it is now prioritizing earnings over the trust of its users. Furthermore, news and rumors about Discord scanning private chats, taking reports out of context (see the "trick you into sending a message containing a number lesser than 13 and then report the message" trend) and redesigning their mobile app (that while visually appealing is now absolutely unusable) have really deteriorated my opinion on the product. The last big issue I have with Discord is the lack of any encryption in private chats (not even opt-in), which, while making the platform easier to use for non-technical people, is a massive security problem from my point of view.

For the above reasons, I am removing my Discord link from my contacts page, encouraging people to chat with me on better platforms if needed. You can chat with me on Matrix at @cutotopo:cutotopo.live. I will still be using Discord from time to time, mostly to talk with friends who don't want to use any other platform, but I will likely not be doing so happily.
